Debbie Elise Sostman
Hi, I'm Debbie! I’m a somatic psychotherapist, educator, and integrative plant medicine facilitator based in Southern California.
I currently serve as a Professor of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy at the Academy of Intrinsic Studies, where I teach licensed Natural Medicine Facilitators in Colorado. My work focuses on the psychology of facilitation, trauma-informed care, therapeutic presence, preparation, integration, ethics, and relational support during non-ordinary states of consciousness.
My professional exploration of healing and alternate states of consciousness began at Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, where I worked under notable mentors in the field, such as Dr. Roland Griffiths, Dr. William Richards, and Mary Cosimano, and contributed to clinical trials investigating the efficacy of psilocybin-assisted therapy for Major Depressive Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa.
After receiving a strong scientific and ethical foundation in the field of psychedelic medicine, I began facilitating high-dose psilocybin journeys at Mycomeditations Psilocybin Retreat. Working with highly trained therapists, intentional group therapy, and diverse guests, I was deeply exposed to the multi-dimensional states of trauma, healing, and collective patterns within the human condition.
My clinical work later expanded into Psychedelic Passage, one of the nation's leading legal psychedelic facilitation networks, where I have since guided more than 500 psychedelic preparation, support, and integration journeys with individuals across the United States. Through the privilege of helping hundreds of individuals cultivate highly intentional and personalized healing journeys across the United States, I have gained thousands of hours in hands-on experience in creating highly safe, conscious, and trauma-informed spaces.
My training involves many diverse, yet compatible modalities such as somatic trauma therapy, intergenerational trauma healing, internal family systems, somatic EMDR therapy, poly-vagal stimulation, somatic experiencing, nutritional healing, kundalini + ashtanga yoga, mindfulness meditation, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, psilocybin-assisted group therapy, and several others skills that cannot be documented in any training or certification.
I am a devoted ally to the sacred medicine of psilocybin and, more recently, a sister exploring the holy sacraments of Acacia and Syrian Rue. Deeply connected to renewal Judaic communities, I am part of a growing movement actively exploring ancestral wisdom in relation to trauma healing and the peace-building needed for the future.
Outside of my work with plant medicine, I am both a student and teacher of Ashtanga-vinyasa yoga, an avid kundalini and breath work practitioner, a multi-instrumental musician, and having traveled to over 45 countries across 6 continents, I am also an impassioned world traveler. I love practicing the Spanish and Hebrew language, rock climbing, making jewelry, and most of all, laughing with my friends.
I have served in other legal psychedelic treatment settings, including Mission Within, where I supported military veterans participating in ibogaine- and 5-MeO-DMT-assisted treatment programs. I also co-facilitate immersive women's healing retreats in Mexico and Peru, integrating plant medicine with somatic psychotherapy, nervous system regulation, relational group process, mindfulness, and trauma-informed approaches to healing.
Previously, I worked as a psychotherapist at Inner-Tribal Treatment, a holistic rehabilitation center serving Native American communities in Southern California. Under the guidance of respected Indigenous elders, including Robert Aguilar of the Pauma Band of Mission Indians and Robert Anderson (Navajo), I provided psychotherapy while learning from traditional approaches to healing that emphasize community, ceremony, culture, and relationship alongside evidence-based psychological care.
In addition, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Pono Path Program, a 501(c)(3) organization based in Hawai’i, where I provide insight on the bridge between trauma, yoga, and cross-cultural insights.
